Voice of America Today is Labor Day here in the US. In this article, learn how labor unions grew in power in the first half of the 20th century and why they're declining in membership today. Do you think labor unions are still vital for protecting the rights of workers? Are they a powerful force in your country?

Monday is Labor Day in the United States, a day set aside to honor American workers and the dignity of labor. The organized labor movement of the late-19th century that spawned the national holiday has waxed and waned over the years.

    • Jabulani Ngubeni Labour unions, they hold a very enourmous support base, especialy in countries which seek to fight currupt governent Africa to be precise, They do seem to be quiet influencial in being pro and anti governmental ideology.Take a look at South africa for instance, the education system and heath care, came to a standstill, that is how labour unions can have impact on communities where they see to exist, I think they posess very enormous strong hold in shapin politics within a community the seem to exist.

Voice of America Our correspondent in Pakistan looks at how the flooding has impacted the country's security situation. Some militant strongholds were devastated by the flooding, but recent attacks also indicate militants may be exploiting the country's weakness to foster sectarian violence.

As Pakistan tries to cope with the worst flooding in its history, the country has seen several major suicide bomb attacks in the past few days against minority Shi'ites. The two major attacks, one in Lahore and the other in Quetta, killed more than 100 people and wounded hundreds of others.

Voice of America Ever wondered what it would be like if zombies (the undead) roamed the streets? Every year in Virginia people gather to play a city-wide game of zombie tag, competing to be the last survivor of a zombie invasion. It's truly a unique event.

Few things bring a community together like large-scale, organized, athletic competition. For some casual athletes, a city-wide game of tag is the perfect way to spend a Saturday night. Add to that a horrible twist, and you get what some call the "Night of the Running Undead." Arash Arabasadi repo...

Voice of America More Americans than ever before are clamoring to learn Arabic and Farsi, and language institutes are having to add classes to keep up with the demand. Many hope that studying these languages will give them a competitive edge for government and NGO jobs that consider language skills critical.

In previous years, many students would have been taking French or Spanish as a second language. Knowledge of Arabic or Farsi is now considered 'critical' to U.S. national security and more Americans are learning these languages today than ever before.
